Evidence for Spousal Sponsorships

A difficult question that comes up often: how do you prove a relationship is genuine between two people so as to convince CIC?

A lot of couples I've interviewed often don't remember exact details/dates, let alone any documentary proof. It takes some memory jogging and creative approaches before we're able to flesh out the all important relationship details. My approach is to give as much detail as possible - and that requires a good documentary record. It's not the easiest thing, but thanks to Google and the electronic age, it's easier than ever to get documentary proof of your assertions.

A great place to start looking for these records is your email account. It's likely filled with life's details and it is categorized by date. If you're like me, you can find your airplane tickets to and from your spouse, pictures you've sent to your family after your vacations, and other comments you might have forgotten about.

If you and your spouse use instant messaging - gChat, iMessage, MSN - it's likely that the programs themselves keep detailed logs about your conversations. This is also a great place to recall some forgotten memories, but the logs themselves can be used to show continued contact while apart. It's likely that you have years of these logs if you and your partner have been using the service for a long time!

Lastly, digital photographs can be used for more than just show and tell. They can also tell you exactly when and where a photo was taken, even if it was not stamped on the picture itself. That's because a lot of digital photos have metadata embedded in them that gives information like camera settings, and - more importantly - dates. Some cellphones and advanced digital cameras also "geotag" the photos so we can find out exactly where the picture was taken! A very useful tool for those forgotten memories.

These are just some of the more unusual locations that I've had to resort to in my clients' sponsorship submissions. Hope it helps some of you looking to do your own sponsorship submission!
